Why do I have 'indentations' on my nails? These indentations are called ridges. Ridges may appear as vertical or horizontal and may appear for several reasons:
Vertical: Vertical nail ridges, which extend from your cuticle to the tip of your nail, are fairly common and often become more numerous as you age. Vertical ridges in your nails are not a health concern. Although the exact cause of such ridging isn't known, heredity may play a role.
Horizontal: Inexperienced or heavy handed technicians may be using the cuticle pusher in the wrong angle, causing the nail to be scraped in the process. Ensure you go to a certified and skilled nail technician to ensure that this is minimised. Ridges may also be caused by certain medications.
How do I improve my nail condition?
Some people may have soft and peeling nails; or dry and brittle nails. There is a distinct difference between the two and different types of treatments are available to improve these conditions.
Soft and peeling nails: Usually caused by unnecessary pressure from (ballet) dancing, overly tight shoes or other similar circumstances. They may also be caused by over filing of the nails, pre- and post- nail enhancements.
Dry and brittle nails: Usually due to lack of moisture in the nails or excessive contact with strong chemicals like detergents.
• Daily application of cuticle oil can help to replenish loss of moisture in nails. • Weekly praffin wax treatments will also assist in locking in moisture and improving the condition of your hands and nails.
• Specific nail treatment systems (see our Nail Rescue Programmes) are also available for more serious conditions, where you will be prescribed a daily treatment for a specific period of time, or until your nail condition improves.
Why does my nail polish peel off the next day?
Improper preparation (oil or dust not completely removed) of the nail before polish is applied may cause this to happen. Another reason is that the free-edge of the nail was not sealed properly with polish.
Why do I have callous?
Callous (dead skin) is your body’s way of protecting your skin from constant friction and pressure.
How does a credo blade work?
A credo blade functions much like a fruit peeler, and tends to remove callous with a scooping action, rather than shaving it off slowly (how a professional podiatrist will remove callouses). The use of credo blades on calloused skin tends to result in excessive removal - too much removal. And too much removal will cause your skin to be irritated which in turn causes your body to produce more callous to protect itself.
How does MissVainJane treat callous? At MissVainJane, we advocate a much gentler approach to the removal of callous. Using small amounts of a callous softening cream, we safely and gently file away excess callous; the treatment may consist of multiple callous treatment sessions, depending on the severity. This gradual approach helps the body to adjust to its new state after each treatment. Of course, to keep callous re-growth in check and under control, a routine home-care regime is equally important.
MissVainJane recommends that a good heel therapy cream (e.g. CND Cucumber Heel Therapy) to be applied nightly after shower and maintained with regular pedicure sessions – a true long term solution to treating callouses!
How common is nail fungus?
Nail fungus is fairly uncommon. Even doctors cannot be 100% sure just by looking if someone has it until they grow a culture, and this process may take weeks or months.
How can we detect nail fungus? It is not possible to detect a nail fungus before it happens. However, you can help prevent it from happening. If a nail fungus occurs, it will appear like a white, patchy area under the nail, as if the natural nail is pulling away from the nail bed. Do consult a doctor immediately to seek treatment. Manicures and pedicures are not advised.
Is nail fungus contagious? Yes, nail fungus can be contagious. If it is not properly taken care of, it could spread to other fingers/toes. The fungus could also spread to another person if an implement or nail file is used on a nail with a fungus and then used on that person.
MissVainJane takes very serious precautionary measures and will not perform services on customers suspected of having fungus. We strongly recommend that you see a doctor immediately to seek treatment.
What does a nail fungus infection look like? Nail fungus infection differs and can affect anything from the color, condition, and shape of your nails. It can also affect how they feel, and may cause the nail to lift off the nail bed. If you are concerned, do seek a professional opinion from a certified doctor.
What is the difference between acrylic, gel, and fibreglass/silk wraps?
All 3 types essentially belong to the acrylic family, except that they come in different forms which require different application methods. The acrylic family comprises of:
• Liquid and Powder: What is commonly referred to as “acrylic”.
• UV Gel or Gel: A pre-mixed acrylic with photo-initiators that causes it to set under UV light.
• Fibreglass/Silk: A wrap acrylic system
Which system is safer or less damaging to my natural nails?
All reputable and professional nail systems are organic, and are equally safe for use. If your natural nails are damaged from wearing enhancements, the damage is most likely due to one of the following factors: • Improper removal (e.g. prying off the enhancements with force)
• Over filing by a heavy handed technician
Which system has a nicer finished look?
All 3 systems can deliver thin, natural looking nails with a high gloss finish - it all depends on the technician’s skill.

Why wax at all?
Waxing is one of the best ways to temporarily remove unwanted hair. It is more effective than shaving because it removes the entire hair from the root, not just from the surface of the skin. Over time, and with repeated waxing, unwanted hair grows back finer and sparser. When shaving, you also scrape and cut the top layer of the skin, which causes razor burn and (over time) makes the skin in that area darker, scalier and harder (dead skin).
How long will the results last?
After your first wax, the results can last 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the individual’s hair re-growth. In most cases, hair growth is minimal during the first week or two and noticeably increases in the third and fourth week. With regular waxing, the length of time required between treatments will increase significantly.
If you used to shave, a few treatments may be required to see the full beneficial effects of the waxing.
Will the hair grow back thicker in those areas?
This is one of the great myths about hair removal – but the answer is a definite NO. Usually, re-growth will be finer, thinner and slower in areas that are waxed on a regular basis.
How long does waxing take? Depending on the body part and the density of the hair growth, your waxing appointment will take between 15 minutes to one hour.
How is the procedure like?
If you are getting your underarms waxed, you will be requested to remove your top and cover your upper body with a body towel. For intimate waxing, be ready to be without wearing anything waist down area. You will be provided with a disposable undie/paper thong, but if you are comfortable, the waxing will be done without any kind of draping. We will do our utmost to ensure that you are feeling most comfortable so as to get the maximum done at the quickest possible time.
Does it hurt? Everyone's tolerance for pain is different. It may be more the anticipation of not knowing what to expect that makes one feel uncomfortable or vulnerable to any discomfort. However, this will quickly subside and lessen with each visit, as the hair thins and less hair is required to be removed from the area.
Caffeine, pregnancy and menstruation can cause increased sensitivity. Taking a mild painkiller 30 minutes prior to your visit has been known to reduce pain.
MissVainJane uses Perron Rigot – a high quality depilatory wax that is the #1 best-selling wax in France. It is heated to just above the temperature of the skin. While Perron Rigot waxes cost more, MissVainJane holds true its values to use only the best products possible for all our customers.
Is waxing for me?
Waxing is appropriate for almost everyone. However, some physicians do not recommend it for people suffering from diabetes or who have varicose veins or poor circulation as they are more susceptible to infection. Waxing should NEVER performed on a client who is using Retin-A, Accutane, Renova, Differin or any other acne medications that thins the skin. It is the responsibility of the client to discuss any concerns, conditions or medications that may be contra-indicated for waxing with their physician first prior to getting waxed. Also, please advise your wax therapist if you are allergic to any foods - because if you can't eat it, you shouldn't put the extracts on your skin. Please be completely honest with your wax therapist about all allergies and medications you are taking – it is for your protection. See our Allergies & Contra-indications list for more information.
Modest-O, Barely There, Honeymoon or Hollywood... How do I choose? At MissVainJane, we offer a variety of intimate waxing types for ladies. Whether you choose the conservative Modest-O! or all-off Hollywood depends entirely on what you are comfortable with or whichever suits your lifestyle best – it's all a personal preference. For first-timers, a good option is to gradually remove more hair after each appointment until the desired look is achieved. You should do whatever makes you comfortable, whether it's a more natural look or totally bare.
If you are still unsure, our friendly therapist can provide additional consultation and advice with you, to ensure you are comfortable with your decision.
Modest-O!: A bikini wax that is the most conservative of all intimate waxing and generally involves removing hair to just inside the panty or bikini line.
Barely There: This can be considered a half-bikini, half-brazilian. It takes off more from the front leaving a regular strip, but does not include the labia and bottom areas.
Honeymoon: This is a traditional brazilian. It's all off the front and back, leaving a strip at the top.
Hollywood: Very similar to Honeymoon, but its no holds barred – totally bare, all off everywhere, including the buttocks area.
Any possible side effects of waxing?
We cannot predict or guarantee who may react, most clients do not experience anything beyond redness and some minor irritation. Hair may break at the root during waxing, causing some hairs to grow out faster. Please follow these guidelines to minimise irritation and possible break outs:
| • |
Avoid immediate exposure to the sun after waxing and wear a sun-screen as recently waxed areas are prone to hyperpigmentation (permanent darkening of the skin) if exposed to the sun.
|
| • |
Avoid heavy exercise for at least 10 hours after waxing. |
| • |
Avoid saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and other heated sources for at least 48 hours. |
| • |
Do not use exfoliating products (AHAs, scrubs, etc) and loofas until at least 24 hours after waxing. |
| • |
Avoid tight clothing after waxing, especially in the waxed areas as it may result in irritation and/or ingrown hairs. |
| • |
Avoid deodorants and anti-perspirants for 24 hours following an underarm waxing treatment. |
| • |
Regular exfoliation may be helpful especially on leg and arm areas. |
| • |
Routine waxing helps the skin get accustomed to the procedure and may minimise irritation. |
| • |
Unfortunately, no shower or oral sex for 10 hours after a Honeymoon or Hollywood (brazilian). |
| • |
Apply Perron Rigot’s moisturizing lotion and/or refreshing gel daily after depilation to soothe skin. |
| • |
Products are available that can be applied topically to avoid in-grown hairs and condition the skin for better waxing results. |
| • |
Women may experience extra sensitivity to waxing up to a week prior to the beginning of their menstruation. |
What are lash extensions?
Lash extensions are a trendy new way to extend the length and thickness of your lashes. They are applied individually to your natural lashes on a hair-by-hair basis, using a bonding agent. Choose from individual, mini-flare or untra-flare lashes to create different looks: Naturél, Glamour or Dolly.
Naturél: Individual lashes are used to lengthen your lashes and give you an amazingly natural look.
Glamour: A combination of mini-flares and ultra-flares are used to create super-luscious, curly lashes.
Dolly: Long untra-flares are used to give lashes a dramatic, voluminous look.
Remember that the extensions should enhance your features and brighten up your eyes, not make you look like a drag queen! Think about what type of look you are going for, and consult your therapist on what suits your face and eyes best.
How long do they last?
Lash extensions will last for the entire length of your natural lash growth cycle. Lash extensions are applied on your natural lash, and as your natural lashes fall, touch-ups are recommended to replace and maintain existing lashes.
Our natural lashes fall off every 60-100 days but since our lashes grow at different life cycles, they do not fall off at the same time. When they are short we do not notice when they fall off; however with your new extensions, it may be more obvious due to the difference in length. Therefore, we recommend that touch-ups be performed every 2-3 weeks to keep those lashes looking good! As the weeks pass, you would have new lashes growing and touch-ups can be performed on these new lashes.
Note that when cluster lashes fall off with your natural lash, the missing lashes may be more obvious, and more frequent touch-up sessions may be necessary.
How do I care for my lash extensions?
Using a lash comb, gently comb your lashes in an upward motion much like when applying mascara. Avoid rubbing and pulling your lashes.
When washing your face, do take care to wash around the eye area and avoid rubbing your eyes. Avoid oil-based cleansers, lotion or make-up remover. Gel cleanser is recommended. Use makeup remover on a cotton swab to gently remove makeup around the eye area. For hard to reach areas, use a Q-tip to carefully clean around the eye.
Do not apply mascara on lash extensions - the ingredients in mascara may cause the bonding agent to deteriote. Traditional eyelash curlers are also not recommended - you shouldn't even need them now that you have beautiful curly lashes!
Any other things to take note of when getting lash extensions?
If you are getting extensions for the first time, the entire session may last from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours, depending on the type of lash extensions you requested for. If you need your old extensions removed, some time also needs to be allocated for that.
If possible, come to your session without any eye make-up and mascara. If you are a contact lens wearer, you may may wish to come to your appointment with glasses. This will help to shorten the time required to prep you up before you get beautiful lashes!
What is lash perming? Lash perming is a safe and long-lasting alternative to daily eyelash curling, giving your lashes a naturally beautiful curl. This treatment uses a wave lotion to curl lashes that will last up to 8 weeks.
This treatment offers an effective semi-permanent alternative to the daily use of mascara and eyelash curlers. Permed lashes remain curled even when wet.
What is lash tinting?
Like with dyeing our hair, lash tinting allows us to colour our lashes. Lighten them to suit your hair colour, or darken them for more definition.
What is brow shaping?
What we aim to accomplish in brow shaping is to discover the best shape for your eyebrows without sacrificing their natural appearance. Pencil thin or overly bushy eyebrows are dated looks that can be distracting rather than enhancing. Just as the shape of a mustache can drastically change the appearance of a man's face, the shape of your brows can affect the appearance of the eyes. In many ways, the overall appearance of the eye area is defined by the arch, length, and thickness of the eyebrow.
